To make it easier on you, we’ll attack this like a journalist and give you the scoop on the new role you’ve accepted. We’re asking the “who, what, when, where, why” (and how!) of being a bridesmaid.

Who is the bridesmaid? Usually the bridesmaids are relatives or friends of the bride… those who know her best. These days, many women choose to have several bridesmaids and some may be from different phases in her life: a childhood buddy, a high school best friend, a college confidant. Not all bridesmaids are from the bride’s inner posse of pals, though. In some cases, a bride will ask her future sister-in-law to be in the wedding party. Or maybe one of the groom’s best dudes is a dame and the bride has graciously invited her to be a bridesmaid. In any case, the bridal party will be comprised of women who are important to the bride and it’ll be much more enjoyable for everyone involved if the bridesmaids can be friendly even if they don’t know each other from the outset.

What is a bridesmaid? Well, an easy explanation comes from another term that’s used for a bridesmaid: “attendant.” The bridesmaid attends to and helps the bride. But if you have a particularly… um… challenging bride, then you may feel more like another term that’s used: “maid.”

When should I start planning for my bridesmaid duties? In a word: now! Your tasks will – at the very least – include planning a shower and/or bachelorette party and having your bridesmaid’s dress fitted. Shower/party plans should start at least two months before the event. When it comes to the bridesmaid dress, if it’s a special order, you should allow six to eight weeks for it to arrive and another three weeks for alterations.

Where am I going to get the money to pay for all of this?? Good question! Start socking away some cash now. Besides chipping in for the shower and bachelorette party, you’ll likely have to buy your bridesmaid’s dress and cover a myriad of other wedding-related expenses.

Why are bridesmaids needed anyway? The chief role of the first bridesmaids was to formally witness the wedding. But in some cultures, the gals also offered protection for the bride as a kind of shield, all wearing the same dress to confuse any would-be attackers who wanted to swipe her dowry. Talk about an important jobs! Now, though, you’re there to “protect” the bride from overbearing moms and overwhelming wedding details.

How can I learn all the ins and outs of being a bridesmaid? Look no further – you’ve found the only place you’ll need. We’ll be your support system with loads of suggestions and ideas from start to finish this time… and next time you’re a bridesmaid!
