27 Dresses... minus 21

I'm OK admitting that I like chick flicks. I am, after all, a chick. Yes, I really dig a Hitchcock classic or a quirky art-house film. But when my husband's out of town, I take the opportunity to search out the "softer" titles he might watch only begrudgingly (I just rented FOX Searchlight's "Waitress" with Keri Russell - I give it two bouquets up, ha! Sorry!).

So it's no surprise that I'm really looking forward to checking out "27 Dresses" - a movie that epitomizes many of our BridesmaidEssentials.com gals - and it opens two weeks from today. "Seriously though, I feel like Katherine Heigl in '27 Dresses' (even though I haven't seen it yet!)," Meredith M. lamented to me recently.

Here's the gist: Emmy winner, "Grey's Anatomy" star and recent newlywed Katherine Heigl is Jane, "a perennial bridal attendant whose own happy ending is nowhere in sight. But when younger sister Tess captures the heart of Jane's boss - with whom Jane is secretly in love - Jane begins to reexamine her 'always-a-bridesmaid' lifestyle," explains the synopsis from the official movie web site.

Jane is the perpetually single bridesmaid, always the go-to gal who watches other people snag happiness while she waits on the sidelines. I can say from firsthand knowledge, though, that the bridesmaid experience is vastly different as a single bridesmaid than as a married one. Honestly, when I was single, walking down the aisle for someone else made me question whether I'd ever walk down it for myself. Sometimes, I wondered if I'd only accumulate bridesmaid dresses and never buy a wedding dress. (I really did continue that whole confession theme I started this blog entry with, huh?!) The experience could be somewhat disheartening instead of carefree and enjoyable.

Obviously, it all worked out in the end, but I don't think I could have convinced the "single me" back then about the confidence and peace of mind I'd have now as "married me." It's just something I gained by living it. I'm guessing this is the sort of lesson our fair Jane will learn throughout the movie and I'll see myself in her character along the way.

Knowing how my beloved chick flicks usually turn out in the end, my guess is that Tess (Malin Akerman) nabs the boss, George (Edward Burns), and Jane realizes she has the white dress-worthy man right in front of her: Kevin (James Marsden). Even if my powers of deduction are weak and the ending surprises me, I'm still looking forward to an evening of popcorn and the pleasure of a solid romantic comedy - especially since it's about a bridesmaid. It's not often I see so much of myself in the lead character...even if I don't really look like Katherine Heigl and haven't exactly worn 27 dresses.

Alright, one last admission of truth: it's only been six dresses.
